ABOUT
Salvē! My name is Reese Moriarty, and I’m a rising senior at Riverdale Country School! My Latin name is Rīsa, and I am in my seventh year of taking Latin, and I started Ancient Greek as a sophomore. I am so excited be able to take over Carpe Diem Classics in New York and spread my love of the Classics! Latin and Greek have been a huge part of my life for so long - loving both the languages themselves and the stories they give us. Diving into works by renowned authors such as Lucretius, Vergil, and Ovid with complicated themes, I’ve appreciated the sense of humanity and connection I feel to these stories, even centuries old. Recently, I completed a research paper on the second book of The Aeneid by Vergil over the summer, and I am currently working on an independent study project relating Ovid’s Metamorphoses to Shakespeare’s poems and plays. I hope everyone can learn and appreciate the Classics as much as I have and take away from these lessons so they can continue studying epic and create myths of their own!
Salvē! I am Jake Craner, or Iācōbus in Latin. I am currently a freshman at UPenn. I have taken Latin since 6th grade, and recently I have added to my classics knowledge by taking Ancient Greek, which I began as a sophomore. My overarching goal for Carpe Diem Classics is to take the basics of the Latin language and make it both simple and enjoyable to learn. My time in the classics classroom has convinced me that everyone should have the opportunity to dabble with Latin and Greek, not only to benefit their education but also to help them understand the empirical fact that almost all parts of modern society draw on the classics. Latin and Greek have truly touched my life, and my hope is to spread the classics to as many people as possible so that they too can experience the curiosity and joy that comes from learning them. I hope you enjoy the lessons. Valē!
